[ It's somewhere outside the meeting hall that they run into each other, Minato seeming to have just exited the building despite the trial having been over and done with hours ago.
He looks up at North, trying to think back after all that's happened— and then shakes his head. ]
No... I want to understand people like that all the more, now. You don't? Even after seeing that?

I'm used to being disappointed.
[ But that doesn't stop him from trying every time, setting himself up for failure and never being surprised when he falls short again and again. Learned helplessness was supposed to kick in sometime, he thinks, but he never learned. ]
I still don't think it's that simple, though. Something like entertainment. People are... so complicated. I can't understand them at all. Do you think this "darkness"-- the "universe"-- is more or less complicated than people are?

[ He doesn't answer that first question, because maybe he is.
He can't really answer that second question, though, and can only manage a shrug while he tries to think it over. ]
...Does it matter? Whether they're people or concepts?

...How would you define "sentience" and "sapience"?
[ Hop in where??? He follows behind her, only because North said "we" instead of "I'm," though all this does is convince Minato that North doesn't know what the difference between the words is either, so they're both going to consult a dictionary. ]
[ Minato's reflexes are enough that he instinctively reaches out and catches the book, but his strength is only at the point where he stumbles back two steps and then sits down hard on his ass. ]
...Right.
[ He crosses his legs so he can lay the dictionary on his lap. ]
So, the S section...
...Right.

So, the S section...
Sentience... "A sentient quality or state." Or, "a feeling or sensation as distinguished from perception and thought." ...Sentient is defined as "being responsive to or conscious of sense impressions." Awareness...
[ hmm, that's going in circles, so Minato flips over to sapience instead. ]
Sapience is defined as "wisdom and sagacity." Sagacity is "the quality of being sagacious." Sagacious means to have "keen and farsighted penetration and judgment," or "discernment."
So what this means is, I am sentient, but not sapient. [ Because Minato is aware, and he's aware that he's dumb. ]

[ Wherever North is, Minato looks visibly relieved to see her. There have been many times in the last year where he envied an android's body— no pain, no need to sleep, they could lose and arm and a leg and still keep going somehow- but the emotional toll can't be that much different from a human's. ]
North... You made it out okay. I'm glad.

[ He's correct and he's saying it. ]
In that case, the universe to me feels like the opposite. It's doing something, but... I don't know yet if it can be reasoned with.

Lots of people ruin other people's lives, but they can still be reasoned with. ...Sometimes. With enough effort.
[ and threat of violence ]

[ He made it out okay? He made it out alive, and that's Minato's criteria for "okay," when it comes to himself. The question makes him smile a little, though, because while it comes with the implication of "you idiot, go back to bed," it also means that North cares. A little. Maybe. ]
It's been two days. Besides, how can I rest if I don't know how everybody else is doing?
